Anchoring Tips
Make sure you’re taking all the right steps to protect your Whaler and your fellow boaters.
Dropping anchor isn't rocket science, but it's not as simple as you may think, either! Check out our list of common-sense tips to make sure you and your Whaler stay put and stay out of harm's way.
First Things First
Make sure all hands, feet and fingers are safely away from the anchor, chain and windless before starting the process. When that chain starts to move, it can do a lot of damage to any delicate parts in its path.
Forces of Nature
When choosing a spot to anchor, consider the impact the tide and changes in the wind could have on your boat’s position. Don’t park so close to other vessels or obstacles that you risk a collision (even a slow one).
Steer Clear
Don’t drop your anchor one top of someone else’s, or anywhere marked with things to avoid, like power lines or structures.
Respect Reefs
Never anchor on top of a patch of coral — you could do a lot of damage! Instead, seek out an open, sandy spot nearby.
Bow Down
Never anchor from the stern unless you already have a bow anchor in place. Many boaters have found themselves swamped this way. And while your Whaler will certainly stay afloat, it’s best to do things in the correct order.
Set the Scene
Never just assume your boat is secure. Back up gently to make sure your anchor is properly set before going about your day. You’d hate to watch your Whaler drift off into the sunset without you!
Line Item
Be careful not to run over your own anchor line as you deploy or retrieve your anchor; this can damage your propellors. Have another passenger stand on bow duty and point in the direction of the anchor to ensure you don’t cross it.
